If you are using coconut oil for the first time then it won’t be easy to tell the difference between a usable coconut oil and an expired one. Using rancid or expired coconut oil can result doing a lot of damage to your body. Pure and fresh coconut oil is crystal clear and has no particles in it, if not in the liquid form it will be cloudy. Here are a few signs that will help you tell if the coconut oil you are using is expired or not.

1. The oil will be yellow in color when in liquid form.
2. The consistency will not be as smooth, there might be lumps and would feel blotchy.
3. It doesn’t taste or smell good, feels as if it’s stale.
4. It makes you puke.
5. You find small particles at the bottom of the container

It is unlikely to cause you food poisoning but has serious consequences if kept using for a long time. using it on your skin and hair can cause your skin to break out and your scalp to develop fungal problems.

How to store coconut oil

Coconut oil is a very easy oil to store. You can choose to store it in your pantry, or in your fridge, or even at room temperature. In the fridge, it will be in the solid form and if stored somewhere hot, it will most likely to be in a liquid form. Make sure that your oil is tightly sealed as oils get affected by the light and heat. The hotter the place where you store the oil, the quicker the oil will go bad. Make sure that you don’t place your coconut oil in a place where temperature changes constantly, e.g. washroom.
