Method 1: Trapped!

For this method, you will need:

  • A glass jar (any type will do, but the ideal is a wine bottle)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • A piece of paper
  • Tape

Set the bottle/glass jar on a flat surface. Pour the apple cider vinegar into the bottle/jar to serve as bait for the fruit flies. This can be substituted for anything sugary (including soda, fruit, or honey).

Now roll the piece of paper in a funnel shape. Tape it so that it maintains shape. Then put the funnel into the top of the glass jar/bottle. This method allures the flies with sweetness. The funnel lets the flies enter the trap, but they won’t be able to escape once inside the jar.

Once enough have gathered, take the jar outside and dump it. Alternatively, you can also pour hot water into the jar/bottle to drown the fruit flies. Repeat until the flies are gone from your home or office space (10 days is a good benchmark, as that’s how long the eggs take to hatch).

Method 2: No Way Out

For this method, you will need:

  • A large bowl, preferably deep
  • Cling wrap
  • Fork/toothpick
  • Tape
  • Fruit fly bait

This method is similar to Method 1. It uses the idea of luring the flies and trapping them inside. This method uses a large bowl instead of a bottle. The bowl should have fly bait, similar to what is mentioned above.

The second step here is to cover the bowl with cling wrap, ensuring there are no lifted edges. You may need to tape down the sides if the cling wrap isn’t sticking.

Next, you’ll poke a few small holes into the cling wrap. Ideally, this should be done with a fork. Avoid making holes that are bigger because the flies will be more likely to escape. Leave this trap overnight, then take the bowl outside to empty it out.

Note: With Method 1 & 2 if you’re planning to drown the fruit flies, make sure to do it outside as well. This prevents the few escapees from being able to infest all over again.

Method 3: Shoot To Kill

For this method, you will need:

  • A squirt bottle
  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Paper towel

As the title suggests, there is no way to save the fruit flies with this method. However, it’s extremely easy to put together and completely safe to use around children and pets.

Instead of using a store-bought spray filled with chemicals, make your own! All it takes is a mixture of hot water and dish soap. Shoot the flies and watch them drop. Then simply wipe them up and toss the paper towel away.

Method 4: Traps

This method makes use of the various traps you can buy in-store. Many people prefer not to have these around the house as they are often toxic to pets or children.

If your household lacks either, then this might be the best option for you. There are dozens of types of traps ranging from glue paper to electronic LED zapping lights. Choose what works best for your infestation and your budget.
